Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is used to treat precancerous lesions (actinic keratoses). Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches on the skin, caused by excessive exposure to the sun, that can sometimes progress into dangerous skin cancers.
Levulan® Kersatick® (aminolevulinic acid) is part of a unique photodynamic therapy (PDT) system to treat actinic keratoses. The medicine is applied to the skin and left on for 60 minutes. The patient is then treated with intense pulsed light to activate the medication. This light then destroys the targeted areas.
Mild to moderate redness can be expected and the patient is instructed to stay indoors for 30 hours after the treatment.
In addition to treating actinic keratoses, the procedure helps eliminate brown spots, broken capillaries and improve skin tone and texture.
